Fall is here and because I’m not in the Cayman’s this winter, I am reminded of the temperature and “season change” here in south Florida. I have been up in Tampa for a few weeks and have had a great time spending time with family and old friends, and doing some fishing. My sister and I got to spend […]
Gettin’ Chilly
“Snook Blitz”
After a slow morning looking for hungry fish on the flats, near Gasparilla Sound, we were ready to call it a day. Bryan, Courtney, and myself had put in some hours blind casting the 8 and 9wt fly rods into the wind. Sore hands and blisters were common on the boat that day. With the wind blowing the water into the harbor […]
Summer without a Skiff
My first summer back in the USA has been great. I’m not quite in my permanent residence, but I have found a new home. Being back in Florida and getting to explore the state and the different fisheries it offers with old friends and some new ones has been fun. The one thing I haven’t done yet is purchase a skiff. It […]
Cold Fresh Water
I am a saltwater guy, you know this. But I finally got a chance to hunt some Native Trout, Rainbow Trout and Carp. I drove south from Western NY into Pennsylvania for 2 days. We started the first day at the Kinzua Dam and fished our way down-river for Northern Pike, Smallmouth and Trout.
Tails on traps
“Yeah that’ll work” says Capt.Bryan Elkins as we make our way under the bridge toward the gulf. He was talking about the shrimp fly i had in my hand after he had told me what we were about to do. Looking for Tripletails under the crab bouys off Little Gasparilla Island. We put the sun behind us and we “ran the traps” heading north.
What wind?
So your learning the “Long-rod” and we ALL are to some extent. But “It’s too windy” so you bring some spinning rods and maybe the cast net. NOPE! I have been recently relocated back to my home waters of Tampa Bay and ITS SPRING-TIME! I’m pumped for the fishing i have missed the last few years. The other thing im stoked about is […]
Little Cayman Island
As i start to prepare myself and gear to leave Little Cayman after almost 10 years im trying to put into words my experiences here, but i think the cliché “A picture is worth a thousand words” fits pretty well for this post. So here are a “few” of my shots from my time on this little island in the western Caribbean.
The “Grouper Hole”
The west end of Little Cayman Island or “the Grouper Hole” is an arrowhead shaped shelf that’s in about 110 feet deep with large coral formations and Barrel Sponges. An almost sheer ledge drops to 1,200 feet on three sides and continues to more than 5,000 feet deep. Just a half of a mile off the beach. On the perfect […]
A lake in the middle of the sea
Hello fellow anglers (bait chunkers and hunchbacks), I write to you from my little apartment on a very little island (19”39’35.89 N, 80″04’58.37 W ) This is my first attempt at a blog but not my first time writing, although you might think so. I am from Brandon, Fl and learned I needed to be near the water pretty early on […]
