I got invited to go on my first duck hunt this past weekend. I had been wanting to go for a while, so I jumped at the opportunity.

I got my permits and stamps in line, and made plans to meet my buddies Nut and Brad over on the east coast on Friday night. After too many beers, we went to bed way too late.

…and 3AM came way too early. With hazy brains, we loaded the decoys, guns and ammo cans into the canoe and shoved off into the darkness.

When we got to our spot, it didn’t take too long to get the decoys set, and the canoe hidden. It was time to settle into the reeds and wait.

I felt like an idiot sitting around waiting to get eaten by a gator. Mostly I was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to get any ducks. Brad and Nut told me that I would be just fine and that I needed to relax. I was going to love it, they assured me. They were right. I had a ball, and was able to get some ducks. It only took me 3 or 4 shots before my first duck fell. That was way better than I was expecting. Brad and Nut both limited out early. I wasn’t able to fill my 6 duck limit, but I did bag 4; 2 teal, a shovler, and a ringer. All in all pretty good for my first time, I think. I’ll be out in the marsh again I’m sure. Those ducks sure are tasty.

Thanks go to my buddies Nut and Brad for showing me the ropes.
