I wouldn’t normally do this but after yesterday I figure I could right a little report/thanks to a product that saved my life. I picked up this mask a couple weeks ago and after I got it in the mail I really wondered what the heck I was going to use it for. It’s normally not THAT cold up here in Jax to need to spend $70 on a product like this. Well, after my experience yesterday I am thinking it was the best money I have ever spent.
The mask is designed to keep your face from freezing while running across the flats or over open seas while venting your hot breath air so you feel nice and warm, but not to warm. Yesterday I made a ledge run in the worst weather I have ever been in my entire life. Winds – 25-30 gust to 40 quartering seas and more 63* water coming in the boat than you could possibly wish for. Even with full wrap around isinglass everyone was getting wet and did I mention it was 36* in the morning and a high of 45*! It was miserable for everyone. Except me. When combined with a rain suit the mask kept me sealed from the elements completely, I felt like I was riding inside my truck the whole way out and back home.( except for the seas :/ )
So, if you wanna keep your head protected from piercing rain and cold air; and don’t mind looking like the “d-bag phantom of the boat” (I think someone called me that at one point but I couldn’t really hear them with my headphones in) then get one and wear it. Save your pretty phace.
