June’s HCFT Tie One Off Challenge

This month we let you choose what pattern we would tie this month. We may continue to do this way because we had a bunch of great suggestions. One of them was mentioned multiple times by several followers and that pattern was the Tarpon Toad. With it being the heart of Tarpon season, we though that pattern was rather fitting. So here you go, the Tarpon Toad.

Materials

• Gama 3/0 SC17
• Large Mono eyes
• Olive 210 thread (color of your choice)
• Tan craft fur (color of your choice)
• Tan marabou (color of your choice)
• Olive EP Fibers (color of your choice)

 

Start your thread close to the eye working back and tie in a half a pencil thickness of craft fur. This is a personal preference, I like the thickness the craft fur gives the tail and I believe it creates a little more movement when working it through the water column.

 

Grab a nice clump of Marabou and tie it in over the craft fur. When doing so make sure to completely cover the hook shank and the craft fur.

 

Work your thread forward and tie in your large mono eyes.

 

Take a quarter pencil thickness of EP Fibers and tie it in just in front of the marabou. When tying in EP be sure to cross tie over the fibers. This really cinches down on the material and keeps it straight and even. Then continue doing the same all the way down the shank of the hook to the eyes.

 

Now you should have what looks something like this, a complete mess. I like to take a comb and comb out all the fibers to make sure there are no knots or fibers laying on the incorrect side of the shank. After combing just trim to whatever size/shape you desire. I like to stick the direction of the material and keep that V shape. After that you’re all done, next you have to catch a Tarpon with it.
