February’s HCFT Tie One Off Challenge

The winner will be selected at random, quality of the fly does not matter as long as you put forth the effort. Winner of this months challenge will win a HCFT hat and a SWC Candy long sleeve tee.

This month we will be tying a Borski Slider. This fly created by Tim Borski (Tim Borski Art) is a great Redfish and Bonefish pattern. The fly replicates a shrimp so it will also work on many different species of fi. The fly can be tied in a variation of different sizes and colors to fit your desired needs.

Fly Recipe

• #2 Orvis Saltwater Hook (size of hook dependent on species)
• Tan Thread
• 7/32 Dumbbell Eyes
• Tan/Brown Hackle Feathers
• Tan Craft Fur
• Tan Deer Body Hair

 

Start your thread in the middle of the hook shank working back then forward towards the eye. Tie in your dumbbell eyes about 3/4 of the up the shank.

 

Take a half to 3/4 width of a pencil sized junk of craft fur and tie out the back. The length will vary depending on hook size, for this fly with a size 2 hook the fur extend out about 2-2 1/2 inches.

Take 4 strands of crystal flash and tie 2 strands on either side of your craft fur. Some people like more flash, some people like less, use the desired amount you feel that works.

Tie in your hackle feather just in front of your craft fur tail and palmer the feather forward. This creates the shrimp legs.

Now take a half pencil width junk of deer body hair and (spin) the hair just behind your eyes. be sure not to spin your deer hair around the entire shank. Before spinning your hair, take your thumb and pointer fingers and hold the bottom side of the shank while spinning your hair. This will give you the spin deer hair affect, but it will keep the hair on one side of the shank.

Spin more deer hair (this time spin the hair so it covers both sides of the shank) working towards the eye of the hook.

Trim your deer hair to the desired size and length. Add sharpie barbs to the craft fur tail and you’re done. That’s the Borski slide.
